EPS Containers = Longer Shelf Life
Product shelf life is a critical component in retail grape cultivation and distribution. Quality grapes packaged to effectively withstand the rigors of produce transport and cold storage result in more product making it to retailers and fresher, juicier grapes being enjoyed by happy customers.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) preserves the life of the grape off the vine from field to the consumer’s tables. All Styrotek products are made of EPS. But we’re not just another cold storage box. Styrotek designs and sells packaging to meet 6 exclusive requirements of the grape industry.
Styrotek designs and sells packaging to meet 6 exclusive requirements of the grape industry:
1. Fruit Protection
The durability of EPS ensures that the fruit has an extra-measure of cushion against impact in transit. Grapes are packed in the field, moved into cold storage, and then shipped to customer locations with minimal contact that could damage the product. EPS is stronger and less abrasive than alternative packaging such as corrugated cardboard or wood crates.
2. Temperature Control
Ventilation holes allow for cooling grapes inside the container. Once the grapes are cold, the foam material insulates from high external temperatures. EPS keeps temperature variability to a minimum. EPS is the only packaging that allows grapes to remain in cold storage with no loss of quality for up to four weeks before transporting.
3. Moisture Shield
EPS packaging reduces moisture loss and prevents bacterial growth. Because the box doesn’t absorb humidity, the natural moisture remains in the grape stems and berries. Fruit lasts longer in cold storage while maintaining quality.
4. Environmental Care
Broken or damaged goods create waste. EPS is a highly durable, rigid foam that protects delicate products such as produce or electronics. Our packaging greatly reduces the potential for product loss due to damage during transport. The production of EPS is also safe for the environment. EPS doesn’t contain CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons), HFCs (hydrofluorocarbon) or formaldehyde, all of which harm the earth’s ozone. EPS also doesn’t produce methane gas or contaminating leachates because the product is inert and stable. All of Styrotek’s EPS packaging is 100% recyclable.
5. Built for Convenience
All Styrotek packaging sizes fit perfectly on a 48“x40” pallet. Please see our customer page for two-layer and three-layer stacking instructions.
6. Safety & Efficiency
EPS containers are lightweight, without slivers, nails, staples, or sharp edges, making them safer and easier to handle for workers. Our EPS boxes only weigh about one pound, so getting the boxes into the field is easy. Two men on a bob tail can load and unload 1,000 boxes on a truck, quickly and safely without additional help.

Product Details
Styrotek expands raw material beads to minimum of 2.5 pounds per cubic feet material for stacking two pallets high as per our stacking instructions. We also make a high-density box, with a minimum of 2.75lb/3 cubic foot for stacking three pallets high. Choose box density based on how high you need to stack the boxes, and how long the product will be in cold storage.
